Contributions at Work for Conservation exhibit April 13, 1997 by Julie Thomas for the Chevy Chase Historical Society Gala at 4 West Melrose Street [1000.138.02, 1000.138.03] 1. Title: Sec. II [Section 2] Chevy Chase Montgomery Co. MM 68 Media: Blueprint Size: H: 30 3/4" W: 41 1/2 1. The paper was surface cleaned where it was needed. 2. The tear was realigned and mended with Japanese tissue. 3. The blueprint was lined with Japanese tissue and flattened. Title: Landscape Drawing of Chevy Chase signed by Nathan Barrett MM 66 Media: Blueprint Size: H: 44" W: 174" consists of 5 sections joined together 1. All sections were surface cleaned on recto and verso. 2. The pressure sensitive tape was removed with organic solvents. 3. The sections were separated and adhesive was removed with scalpel and cotton swabs. 4.Each section was lined with Japanese tissue and flattened between felts. The tissue was overlapping in weak areas of the primary support. Numerous tears were reinforced on verso, after completion of lining, and were flattened locally. 5.Missing areas were compensated with Japanese tissue to reinforce the print structurally. 5.The first section which is damaged more severely than other sections was protected in a Mylar folder. The pressure sensitive tape and discoloration caused by adhesive were removed/reduced with organic solvents. 3. The tears were realigned and mended with Japanese tissue. 4. The print was lined with Japanese tissue, Kizukishi medium weight. 5. The blueprint was flattened between polyester web and blotters under weights. The most prominent creases were flattened locally with bone folder after completion of lining. 3. The edge tears were mended with Japanese tissue. 4. The drawing was lined with Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste and flattened between felt, under weights. Blotters were used during the final flattening. The pressure sensitive tape and surgical tape patches were removed with organic solvents. The treated areas were washed on a suction table to remove discoloration caused by glue from tape. 3. All tears were realigned and mended with Japanese tissue. 4. The watercolor was lined with Japanese tissue and flattened between blotters under weights. Two pieces were joined with Japanese tissue hinge. Treatment cost: 1.large piece: $ 1540.00 2.smaller piece $ 510.00 Materials: 1.$ 120.00 2.$55.00 Total$ 2225.00 Nathan Barrett, cartographer & publisher date: 1892-93 donated by Edith Claude Jarvis, Feb. 1989 see accession number 1989.06.09 for finished product Outstanding landscape features which bear testimony to Nathan Barrett's original landscape plan, include the arched canopy of trees framing West Irving Street and triangular parklike lots at Magnolia Parkway and Chevy Chase Circle, and at Laurel Parkway and Kirke Street. A major landscape feature - Chevy Chase Circle, located on the DC-Maryland border - unites the two jurisdictions and provide a gateway to Chevy Chase. The sandstone fountain, built in 1932 and dedicated to Newlands, was recently restored by the Chevy Chase Land Company. Hanna Szczepanowska,Supervising Conservator, Maryland State Archives. Ms. Szczepanowska holds a Masters Degree in Conservation of Art on Paper and Parchment from the University of Nicolaus Copernicus, Torun, Poland and has presented and published a number of papers in the field. She has held positions as a conservator with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, the New York State Bureau of Historic Sites, the Williamstown Regional Art Conservation Laboratory at the Clark Art Institute, and the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia. She is certified by the American Institute for Conservation as a paper conservator. |
