Description |
Postcard, postmarked 1905, with an image of the Library and Post Office, Chevy Chase, MD. This postcard was postmarked in Washington, DC on November 27, 1905 and addressed to Miss Anna Newlands, 2902 Clay Street, San Francisco, California. Anna Newlands may have been the sister of Francis G. Newlands (1848-1917), the founding president of the Chevy Chase Land Company and the U.S. Senator from Nevada at the time of his death. The photographic image of the lilbrary and post office is 4.5 inches by 3 inches, leaving a small white margin on two sides of the 3.5 inches by 5.5 inches postcard. Handwriting below the photograph identifies the building as "Library and Post Office, Chevy Chase, Md." The text of short hand-written message on the right side reads: "When you can spre your Mother, please [underlined] send her back, miss her awfully! [underlined[. Yours, M.K.C." We do not know the full name of the sender. The photograph was taken from the east side of Connecticut Avenue. The streetcar rails are visible. There is a hedge along the sidewalk in from of the library and postoffice. There are few leaves on the tree, suggesting that the image was taken in fall or winter. The trees are relatively small next to the building and along the sidewalk; a small tree located just in front of the photographer bisects the image.
