A Saga of Two Centuries Autobiography by Stanwood Cobb Signed by the author, it says; "To Chevy Chase Village, Wtih Kindest regards and gratitude for 60 years of happy and successful years there. Stanwood Cobb, July 4th, 1982" 2 copies Introduction: Many people have urged me to write my autobiography. I am now setting forth on such a task, in which I shall try to present the drama not only of my own life, but also that of humanity during a period of more colossal changes than history has elsewhere recorded. I can trace my beginnings to 19th Century New England, in a period where manners, thoughts, and attitudes still expressed the foundational Puritanism of the people. Where the rich rode in carriages while others went afoot. Where the middle class, in general, seldom saw more of the world than was within a 20 mile radius. Where all seemed fairly assured and everything seemed stable. I shall try to describe this fairyland, try to convey its atmosphere as I recall it, and subsequently to describe the vast changes I have witnessed in a life of 97 years. It is indeed a privilege to have witnessed with my own eyes a transformation of society such as even H. G. Wells, my favorite author at the turn of the century, could not have envisioned. So this book will be more than an autobiography. I hope to make it a saga of the most critical period this planet has ever lived through—more critical perhaps than any it will ever live through again.
