Description |
Novel written by Clarice Lispector, a Brazilian author who lived in Chevy Chase from 1952 to 1959. This version was translated into English by Giovanni Pontiero, and published in 1990. Dewey #: 869.3. Summary from inside cover: The protagonist of Near to the Wild heart (the title comes from Joyce's Portrait of the Artist) is a young woman in quest of an 'authentic' experience. Like Lispector herself, who was nineteen when she wrote the book, Joana is 'affected by everything': she sees and hears too much. The first part of the novel evokes Joana's early years with her father, orphanhood, first infatuation, her unloving aunt's home, and puberty. present throughout is the grown-up Joana, a conventional housewife with unconventional thoughts. In the second part, Joana emerges as a reflective woman, moving towards freedom down new paths of awareness opened with pain and effort. This is a moving tale of self-discovery, a candid 'autobiography before the event'. |
